Hole-in-the-wall spots hold a special place in my heart, and I’ve got a new one to share with all my Mexican food lovers. I drove past it so many times as it’s hardly noticeable in a small strip mall between Celanese Rd. & Cherry Rd. – its called El Molcajete.
A Molcajete (mole-cuh-heh-teh) is the volcanic stone bowl this feast is served on, stuffed with steak/carne asada, shrimp, chorizo, queso fresco, nopales/cactus, and roasted jalapeños. If you’ve never had cactus, don’t knock it til’ you try it – it’s a great compliment to any Mexican dish.

This Molcajete is a steal at only $16.95! Most restaurants in the area charge $30-$40+ for the exact same thing! Get it while you can!
If you want the deets on the torta, here they are:

The tortas I grew up on featured your meat of choice, refried beans, avocado, no lettuce, and the most important ingredient was the queso fresco.

Anytime I’m considering ordering a torta anywhere, my first question is, does it come with queso fresco? The answer is usually no. Most restaurants here use shredded cheese, so I make the special request for the queso fresco because that’s how we do it in Cali. Some restaurants won’t do it, but El Molcajete delivered! Request it next time, so you know the difference.

The wine margarita was surprisingly delicious, and their sangria looks like something I’ll need to try on my next visit!
